How your Diet Affects your Breath

Bad breath is a dental problem that not only wreaks havoc to your dental health, it can also have a significant impact on your social life. The foul smell coming from your mouth may be a sign of another dental problem, such as tooth decay or gum disease. Bad breath can also signify that there is a problem with your digestive system. But did you know that what you eat and drink can also contribute to the development of bad breath problems?

Bad breath can be caused by regular and heavy consumption of food items and beverages that have strong smells. You may not realise this, until you notice that you don’t like how your breath smells anymore. If you always have garlic and onions with your meals, it should not be surprising if you suddenly notice that your breath does not smell as fresh as it once was. In some cases, the smell of onion and garlic can be so strong that the people around you will start noticing foul smell, too – especially when you accidentally burp.

Your daily caffeine dose and nightly cocktails can also be the culprits for bad breath problems. Both alcohol and coffee can b drying to the mouth. When saliva production is decreased and the mouth goes dry, bad breath-causing bacteria will have a stronger chance of multiplying inside the mouth. Other food items that may be known to trigger bad breath include dairy products, and high-sugar food items (which can cause tooth decay to develop).
