Dental Implants and CT Scans

Dental Implants and CT Scans

A dental implant treatment is an ideal solution for missing teeth problems. Before the actual placement of the implants, diagnostic tests will need to be taken to determine the suitability for the treatment and to give the implant dentist a clear view of the patient’s anatomy for purposes of safety & high treatment accuracy. One of the most important pieces of equipment used in preparing for a dental implant treatment is the CT scan.

A dental CT scan produces three-dimensional images, which give a much clearer visual idea compared to the images obtained through traditional x-rays. These clear images help the implant dentist in the formulation of a highly-precise treatment plan including where to place the implants on the patient’s jawbone. The digital images obtained by a dental CT scan are uploaded to a software program and used to plan a treatment that is highly-accurate, completely safe, and successful as a long-term solution to tooth loss problems. In an implant treatment, the accurate images obtained through a CT scanner also helps the dentist in determining the type of implant to be used corresponding to the patient’s anatomy & requirements, and whether there is sufficient bone structure to support the placement of the dental implant.

CT scans are also used as preparation for other dental treatments, such as orthodontic braces to solve crooked teeth, and advanced oral surgery. Dental CT scans also produce a much lower dose of radiation compared to conventional x-ray machines.
