Do You have Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a common dental problem that should be treated in its early stages, before it becomes a bigger concern. You may not even know that you already have a gum problem until the time when you experience discomfort – and at this stage, the disease may have already become quite complicated. When gum disease goes untreated, it can affect not only the gums, but also the teeth and the jawbone underneath the gum tissue. If proper treatment is not given, gum problems can even lead to tooth loss and significant damage to the soft tissue.

The symptoms of gum disease usually go undetected, or you may think that what you have will eventually go away on its own. Getting to know gum problem symptoms can help save you from discomfort and the high cost of treating advanced gum disease (periodontitis).

How will you know if you have gum disease? Here are the most common signs and symptoms to look out for:

• Red, tender, or swollen gums
• Receding gums – when the gums pull away from the surface or base of the teeth, making the teeth look longer than normal
• Loose teeth, or teeth that start to have spaces in between them
• Bleeding while tooth brushing, flossing, or while eating
• Bad breath (the persistent kind)
• Presence of pus in between the teeth and gums
• Changes in the fit of partial dentures
• Changes in the way the teeth come together when the mouth is closed (changes in the bite)
