What are the Different Types of Teeth?

As you look in the mirror, what is the first thing that you notice about your smile? Do you focus on the whiteness of your teeth, or think about how straight they are without any hint of crookedness? If you look closely, you will notice that not all of your teeth look exactly alike. This is because all of your teeth have different roles to play every time you chew or bite on food. For example: the teeth located on the front portion of your mouth will have a different responsibility from the teeth located in the back part of your mouth.

There are different types of teeth which are differentiated according to their location inside the mouth, their appearance, and the role that they play. Teeth are not just categorised into natural, and false (such as dentures or a dental bridge). There are four different types of teeth, namely:

  • Incisors – These are the four front teeth, located on the upper and lower jaws. These teeth are mainly used for cutting food, such as when you bite into an apple or a sandwich.
  • Canine Teeth – The pointy teeth located on both sides of your incisors (upper and lower jaw) are called “canine teeth”, and may be considered as “fangs” (if they ever grow to vampire-like proportions!). The sharpness of these teeth helps in tearing food.
  • Premolars – These teeth are wider and longer than the incisors and premolars, and are used for grinding and crushing food. There are a total of eight premolars for the upper and lower jaw, two of which are sandwiched between each canine tooth and the molars.
  • Molars – These are considered to be the strongest teeth, working with the tongue to help grind the food before it can be swallowed. There are a total of eight molars, four each on the upper and lower jaw.
